Charity Event: Project Linus

The Craftstronauts Club is partnering with Project Linus to host a blanket-drive charity event.

Join us in creating and providing access to home-made blankets for communities in need.

About the Event

When:

Saturday August 22 2026 (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM)

What:

Project Linus is a group that makes blankets to give to children ages 0-18 that are in hospitals, shelters, and social service agencies in need of something special. These blankets can be no-tie fleece, quilted, even crocheted/knitted!

​

The Craftsronauts club will host a Blanket Workshop in coordination with the Houston Project Linus Chapter to make small quilted blankets and no-sew fleece blankets. This will be an all day off-site and family friendly event! No-sew blankets are easy to make and great for kids to help. For folks who enjoy sewing, we will have kits to make "Quilt as you go" blankets!

 

The club will be asking for donations to Project Linus at the event to help them keep the love going. After administrative costs, all proceeds from the event will go directly to Project Linus.

How Can You Help?

  • Be there day of!

  • Help sourcing materials

    • Fabrics, scissors, sewing machines

    • Donations are welcomed, anything loaned (scissors and machines) will be take care of and given back post event

  • Help making quilt kits (more to come at next prep meeting!)

  • Spread the word​

    • More people = more blankets = more kids helped!

FAQ

  • Do I need experience to participate? 

    • No experience necessary! The bulk of the blankets we are making are called fleece tie blankets - the only skills necessary are cutting straight lines with scissors and tying a square knot. If you have either of those skills, you can participate! 

    • A limited number of sewing machines will be available for some very basic quilting tutorials for participants 12 and up. 

  • What if I can't finish a blanket while I'm at the event? 

    • No worries at all bestie - you can leave it with us for the next group to pick up on, or you can take the blanket you’re working on home and bring it back to us later! 

    • We will be accepting blankets through September 1st, 2026 - please drop off at the Gilruth front desk and say you’re leaving them for the Craftstronauts! 

  • What if I want to make a blanket on my own time? 

    • That’s great, we would love to bring your blanket to Project Linus along with the other donations! We will be accepting blankets through September 1st, 2026 - please drop off at the Gilruth front desk and say you’re leaving them for the Craftstronauts! 

    • All Project Linus blankets must be new and handmade - see the Linus Project FAQs. 

  • Where do monetary donations go? 

    • First we will cover the cost of running the event - paying for materials, venue rental, etc. 

    • Every penny after the cost of the event is covered will go directly to Project Linus

  • Where will the donated blankets go? 

    • To kids in our area! 

    • Past donations through our Linus POC have gone to Interfaith Ministries, M.I. Lewis in Dickinson, Santa Fe ISD, CASA, KidsHarbor in Liverpool, UTMB Galveston, and Ronald McDonald House in Galveston.

  • I can’t make the event :( how else can I help? 

    • If you would like to make a blanket on your own, we will be accepting donations through September 1st, 2026.

    • If you would like to donate money, please use the QR codes on this page.

    • If you would like to donate blanket materials (fabric (especially fleece or cotton), batting, scissors), please contact Alyssa Auten (alyssa.c.auten@nasa.gov) as soon as possible so that we may use these materials during the event 

  • What is a Craftstronaut? 

    • We’re happy you asked! The Craftstronauts is a crafting club started at the Johnson Space Center. Most of our members are badged through NASA, but that is not a requirement for joining the club. We are open to all adult crafters in the area! 

    • We are local to the NASA/JSC area, and most of our meetings are local to this area.  

    • Any type of crafter with any type of experience is welcome!  

  • What if I want to be a Craftstronaut?
